2021FA GS: Correctional Systems (CJUS-320-74)

This course provides a historical review and survey of contemporary correctional systems in the United States. Prisons have been a major institution within the law enforcement system in the industrial world for many centuries. However, prisons have undergone great expansion since the 1990's in the US and have become a political force on their own. Nonetheless, it is widely recognized that continuing the expansions of prisons beds, if politically expedient, is not sustainable economically and that prisons may have an overall detrimental effect on many of the inmates in them.
